Thailand is located in the tropical area andreceiving 18-19 MJ/m2/day of solar radiation. Considering this prospectgovernment has introduced Alternate Energy Development Plan (AEDP) for the year2012 – 2021 to generate 2000MW of electricity from solar PV. Government hasintroduced Feed-in Tariff (FiT) in order to achieve the target and will lastfor 25 years. Only considering the amount of solar radiation received by the area isn’t sufficient for calculating the prospect of the roof for solar PV especially in urban area. Roof type and nearby buildings should be included inthe calculation process. Object Base Image Analysis (OBIA) along with fuzzyrule was utilized to classify roof from satellite image. Overall accuracy wasachieved up to 74% which was due to complex roof type in terms of shape, size,color etc. Shadow map was generated for each hour from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM throughout the year from 3D of structure. On an average north-south andeast-west facing roof was getting sunlight 7 hours in a day throughout the yearbut if there was tall building beside, average sunlight hours reduced to 4 – 5hours based on height difference. Module efficiency on different faces wasmultiplied with hours of getting sunlight to identify potential roof area.Payback period of initial investment was varying from 5 to 13 years based onthe roof type, direction and shadow impact. House owner can make profit up to300% depending on potentiality of the roof. Based on cost benefit analysis itcan be concluded that north – south facing roof can generate much profit to theowner with minimum payback period even though 50% area are unusable.
